What are Field Dog Tests?
Field dog tests are non-competitive CKC events intended to evaluate a pointing dog’s hunting ability. A dog’s performance in the field is scored by a judge according to a standard provided by the CKC. The testing procedure evaluates different aspects of a dog’s hunting skills for which it receives a score in each category. All dogs are handled on foot although the judges may be on horseback.. Each dog must locate game and establish a point.
Titles Available
There are three different titles for field dog tests according to the level of accomplishment of a dog.
Field Dog Junior (FDj)
. must locate a game bird and establish a point
. do not have to retrieve
. compete one at a time
Field Dog (FD)
. must locate a game bird and establish a point
. must hold their point until the handler flushes the bird
. must perform a retrieve on land
. compete one at a time
Field Dog Excellent (FDX)
. must locate a game bird and establish a point
. must be steady to wing and shot
. must retrieve on land and through water
. must honor another dog on point
. are braced with another dog
Dogs are awarded CKC titles in each of these levels upon receiving three qualifying test scores of 75% or better and without any failures in any one category. Dogs can enter at the Field Dog level without the FDj title but in order to enter a Field Dog Excellent test the dog must already have the FD title. |
